The first quarter of 2020 demonstrated how the COVID-19 pandemic has the ability to exert pressure on existing social and political fissures across the global landscape. The maritime environment in the Asia Pacific is no exception to this rule.
Weakened state capacity and the associated rise in violence have translated into spill-over effects in the maritime domain, with rising incidents of maritime instability recorded across the region.
Our conversation will investigate the drivers behind maritime crime such as drug trafficking and illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing under the COVID-19 social restriction movement order in the region, and offers prospects in preserving maritime security under the new norm.
